Restaurants and Cafes

  • High-End Restaurants: A tip of 5-10% of the bill is appreciated but not mandatory.
  • Casual Eateries and Street Food: Tipping is not expected, but you can round up the bill or leave a small amount of change.

Hotels

  • Porters: A tip of 20,000-50,000 VND (around $1-2 USD) is common for help with luggage.
  • Housekeeping: Leaving 20,000-50,000 VND per day is appreciated for good service.
  • Concierge: If they provide exceptional service, a tip of 50,000-100,000 VND is suitable.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing Services

  • Taxis: Tipping is not expected but rounding up the fare to the nearest 10,000 VND is a nice gesture.
  • Ride-Hailing Apps: No tipping is expected, but you can round up the fare or use the app’s tipping function if available.

Tour Guides and Drivers

  • Tour Guides: Tipping 100,000-200,000 VND (around $4-8 USD) per day is customary for good service.
  • Drivers: Tipping 50,000-100,000 VND per day is common.

Spas and Salons

  • Massage Therapists and Beauticians: A tip of 10-15% of the bill is appreciated for good service.

General Tips

  • Always tip in Vietnamese Dong rather than foreign currency.
  • Hand the tip directly to the person you wish to thank, rather than leaving it on a table or counter.
  • Tipping is a way to show appreciation for good service, but it is not obligatory. If you feel that the service was exceptional, a small tip will be welcomed and appreciated.

TIPPING IN VIETNAM

While tipping is not deeply ingrained in Vietnamese culture, it is a nice gesture to show appreciation for good service, especially in the hospitality and tourism sectors.
